Start with the water supply

Plan the storage capacity around the area to be watered and how the cistern will be refilled.

Irrigation planning on Shelter Island

Shelter Island publishes guidance on cistern-fed irrigation systems, water sources and annual irrigation permits. Review the Town’s information and confirm the current requirements for your proposed system with the Building Department.

Cisterns and Shelter Island’s groundwater

Shelter Island’s freshwater supply is limited, particularly in coastal areas. The Town identifies excessive pumping as a risk for saltwater intrusion. A separately supplied irrigation cistern can reduce the watering demand placed on your well.

For new turf-irrigation cisterns, the Town’s code permits off-island trucked water or qualifying captured runoff. Filling from a well or hose is prohibited. Confirm the requirements for your system with the Building Department.

Water delivery and refills

You or your property manager can coordinate water deliveries directly, or Binder Pools can help arrange them if needed. Agree on the water source, gallons per load, fill connection and delivery access before scheduling the first fill.

Plan your Shelter Island cistern

Email your property address, any available site or irrigation plans, and photos of the proposed location and equipment access. Include the intended irrigation use and proposed fill source.
